Does my cat need heartworm preventative?

Yes!! Although cats get heartworm disease much less often than dogs, they still are at risk for developing the deadly problem. On average, for every 6 dogs with heartworm disease, there will be a cat infected with heartworms. Interestingly, indoor cats are at equal risk as outdoor kitties, due to the lax immune system typically seen in indoor-only cats.

Heartworm disease in cats is NOT treatable; the most common sign of it in cats is sudden, unexplained death. Obviously, the preferred method of dealing with feline heartworm disease is to prevent it from happening in the first place!
